Fuel

Thames Marine Services offers a range of Fuels

Thames Marine Services is fully licensed with the Port of London Authority (PLA) to supply fuel on the River Thames, London.

Marine Gas Oil (MGO)

Refined from crude oil, gas oil is a middle distillate liquid. There are two recognised standards of gas oil:

Class D:
Class D has a maximum sulphur content of 1000ppm and meets the current BS2869 and ISO 8217 specifications. Also known as 1000ppm, 0.1% or LSGO (low sulphur gas oil).

Class A2:
Class A2, also known as ULSGO (ultra-low sulphur gas oil) is suitable for mobile, off-road transportation that are required to use sulphur free fuel. Class A2 meets the current BS2869 and ISO 8217 specifications and has a maximum sulphur continent of 10ppm (0.001%)

  • Compatible with BS2869 Class A210ppm & Class D 1000ppm (except for Cetane Value) – meeting British standard BS 2869 for heating oil
  • Same calorific value as gas oil – giving you the same heat output for less money
  • Same physical properties as gas oil – no burner modifications required
Totally miscible with gas oil – no need to empty fuel tanks before changing to IHO
  • Low CFPP/pour point – allows year-round summer/winter performance
Reduced sulphur content – lowers acidic flue gas emissions by up to 50% compared to Class D gas oil
  • FAME/biodiesel free – reducing the potential for a bacterial attack on the stored fuel
  • Contains multifunctional additive – provides fuel system cleanliness and corrosion protection, reduced emissions and combustion chamber deposit control
  • Light colour, low odour and sediment-free – much cleaner than other commercially available products

Alternative Fuels

We’re dedicated to ensuring a greener environment for future generations. For those seeking to reduce their carbon footprint by switching to a greener alternative to red diesel, we offer both HVO fuel and Shell GTL.

HVO

HVO is a direct replacement for red diesel that offers improved all-weather performance, particulate-free running and a vastly increased storage life of up to 10 years, whilst lowering greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%.

Hydro-treated Vegetable Oil or HVO, is an advanced renewable diesel fuel, derived from 100% renewable waste streams through hydro treatment and isomerisation. It meets bio content requirements with no FAME included and, to that point, avoids the instability and operability issues seen by many low blend diesels and high blend biofuels.

As a drop-in fuel and with a wide range of OEM approvals, Crown HVO can be used within existing fleets, equipment and machinery without changes to infrastructure or capital expenditure. This removes cost barriers and enables a practical step towards decarbonisation.

HVO fuel offers a fast and simple step towards “net zero” with no CAPEX requirement and reduces greenhouse gas CO2 emissions by around 90%. The feedstocks used to manufacture Crown HVO are 100% waste, drawn from primary sources which have bypassed damage to the environment, natural ecosystem and the drive for global deforestation.

For every 1,000 litres of diesel burned, you will produce 3.6 tonnes of greenhouse gas CO2, compared to just 195kg GHG CO2 for every 1,000 litres of HVO burned.

HVO is a drop-in alternative to fossil diesel, meeting EN 15940 standards and Fuel Quality Directive 2009/30/EC Annex II. There is no need to modify existing infrastructure – simply order HVO diesel today and go!

Shell GTL Fuel (GTL – Gas-to-Liquids)

At Thames Marine Services, we operate our fleet using Shell GTL fuel

Shell’s Gas-To-Liquid (GTL) technology converts natural gas into high-quality liquid products that would otherwise be made from crude oil.

This ‘drop-in’ fuel can be used as a direct replacement for conventional diesel fuels, suitable for both on-road and off-road applications without the need for engine modifications. It can reduce harmful emissions and improve local air quality.

Gas-to-Liquid (GTL) fuel is part of the paraffinic family of fuels which has improved combustion properties inside standard diesel engines, helping to reduce emissions and improve local air quality. Trials have shown that Shell GTL Fuel can reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by up to 37%, and particulate matter (PM) by up to 50% compared to conventional diesel. Other benefits include;

  • DROP IN FUEL – Can be implemented as a drop-in replacement for conventional diesel
  • LOWER EMISSIONS – Reduced emissions of regulated pollutants
  • NOISE REDUCTION – Noise levels in some engines can be reduced by 1-4 dB
  • NON TOXIC – Readily biodegradable
  • OUDORLESS – Creating cleaner working environments
  • COLD START – Winter grade fuel all year round
  • STORAGE STABILITY – Better safety, handling and storage characteristics due to a higher flash point”
